IV Infusion via Curlin Pump


Instructed patient/caregiver to wash your hands with antibacterial soap and water. Instructed patient/caregiver to gather all the supplies you will be using: a. Alcohol Wipes b. Medicine Bag c. IV Tubing d. Saline Flush e. Multivitamin (and/or any other additives) f. Syringe with needle Instructed patient on adding medication additives to TPN bag: 1. Draw up the amount as listed on order of the additive into the syringe. 2. Wipe the injection port of your TPN bag with alcohol and allow to dry. 3. Hold the injection port firmly and carefully insert the needle through the injection port making sure that you keep the needle straight and in the center, so you do not accidentally puncture the side or the bag that would cause leaking. 4. Push the syringe plunger to inject all of the medication into the TPN bag. Pull the needle straight out of the injection port. 5. Immediately discard the used needle and syringe in a sharps container. 6. Gently rock the TPN bag back and forth to mix the medication and solution well. Instructed patient/caregiver on Installing Batteries: 1. Locate battery door on back of pump. 2. Open the lock; slide door open in downward motion. 3. Install two “C” batteries into pump and close door by sliding door back into place. Taught and instructed patient/caregiver on loading IV tubing: 1. Fully open the door located on the top of the pump. 2. Remove IV tubing from package and locate the Blue Tubing-Guide and Yellow Flow stop. 3. Insert the Blue Tubing-Guide into the receptacle on the right side of the pump (look for the blue arrow). 4. Twist tab off Yellow Flow-Stop. 5. Insert Yellow Flow-Stop into the receptacle on the left side of the pump (look for the yellow arrow). 6. Close pump door and latch it securely. 7. Remove protective cap from spiked end of tubing. 8. Push spiked end of tubing into IV bag using a twisting/pushing motion. Also gave patient/caregiver instructions on starting Infusion for the first time: 1. Turn pump on (locate ON/OFF button on the top left of keypad); a. Pump will sound 3 beeps and go through a series of self tests on the display screen. b. When pump has completed its self tests the pump then will display the following: ENTER TO SELECT PROGRAM BIOMED SETUP 2. Press the yellow YES button located on pump keypad to select “PROGRAM”. 3. The pump will then display the following: ENTER TO SELECT (RESUME)** REPEAT RX NEW PROGRAM 4. Press the yellow YES button located on the pump keypad to select “REPEAT RX”. a. **This option will show up the next time you will change the IV bag. Follow the same steps as listed. DO NOT choose this option. Always choose “REPEAT RX” after you have attached a new IV bag. Only choose “RESUME” if you have paused the infusion for whatever reason. 5. The pump will then run through its pre-programmed settings and will then display: RUN TO START NO TO REVIEW OPTIONS OR PRIME 4. Press and release the PRIME/BOLUS button located at the lower right corner of pump keypad. 5. Press and HOLD the PRIME/BOLUS button until tubing is completely filled with fluid. 6. When priming is complete press YES button to exit PRIME screen. 7. Wipe tip of line with alcohol prep pad (approx. 10-15 seconds). 8. Flush IV catheter using Saline. 9. Connect IV tubing to tip and then Push the RUN/PAUSE button to start infusion. Then provided teachings and instructions to patient/caregiver that about the same time tomorrow evening, they will be changing out the bag to a new one.
