Informed patient that foley catheter will be irrigated at this time. Patient verbalized understanding and agreeable to irrigation. Washed hands with soap and water. Dried well and put on gloves. Opened the catheter irrigation kit. Unfolded the paper drape and placed it under the connection between the catheter tube and the drainage bag. Poured room temperature normal saline irrigation solution into the collection container. Drew up 60 ml into catheter tipped syringe. Cleansed the site where the catheter tubing and the drainage bag tubing connect with an alcohol swab. Gently disconnected the catheter tubing from the drainage bag tubing. Placed the catheter plug into the end of the drainage bag tubing and set aside. Inserted the tip of the syringe in the catheter tubing. Gently pushed the solution into the bladder. Removed the syringe from the catheter tubing and allowed the irrigation solution to flow back out of the bladder and into the drainage tray. Irrigated a total of ____ ml. After all of the solution has drained, wiped the end of the catheter tube with an unused alcohol pad. Removed the catheter plug from the drainage bag tubing and reconnected the catheter tube to the drainage bag tubing. Discarded the used irrigation solution by flushing it down the toilet. Removed gloves. Washed hands with soap and water.
